Children's Ministries

Infants and Toddlers

BUMC's infant and preschool program provides children with more than a place to be entertained while their families attend worship. In Promiseland, children are loved, welcomed, and encouraged to grow. Our goal is to provide attractive and safe spaces that encourage development and awareness of others. Love is expressed by caring adults through attentiveness and thoughtful preparation. Promiseland helps children learn that God is love and that church is a fun place to be.

On Sunday mornings and during our LifeSign service on Saturday nights, nursery care is provided by paid and volunteer staff. A pager system is in place in care parents need to be notified while in worship.

PreK-6th Grade

Worship

Children are always welcome and encouraged to attend Burke United Methodist Church worship services. Also, communion in the United Methodist Church is open to children of any age.

Our church design enables parents to take children who become restless into the Narthex (the back of the sanctuary), and still be able to hear and be in full view of the service. There are quiet activity bags, labeled Pre-K or Elementary, available in baskets at the back of the sanctuary.

Sunday School

Sunday School is available during Sunday’s 10:30 service for all ages. Children's Church is offered at the 9:00 service for Pre-K through 6th grade, and during the 5:30 Saturday night LifeSign service for Pre-K through 6th grade. Please visit our Sunday School page for exact schedules and room assignments.

During the summer, Sunday School is offered at 9:00 and 10:30 for Pre-K children. A combination children's worship program is offered to K-4th graders. Older children attend worship in the sanctuary with their family.

For more information, please see our Sunday School page.

Acolytes

Fourth graders and older are invited to attend acolyte training in the fall or spring. Trained acolytes are scheduled to serve at the 9:00 or 10:30 AM worship services. Acolytes are provided with special white robes. Contact Kristin Kelso for more details.

Music

There are three children’s choirs, and two children’s handbell choirs active at Burke UMC. More information can be found on the music ministries page.

Missions

We want to raise mission-minded children. Children are encouraged to participate in the many mission opportunities here at Burke UMC.

Kids Can Do Mission Clubs:  BUMC offers monthly opportunities for children in grades K-6 to use their unique gifts and graces to serve people locally and around the world. Kids Can Do Missions provides a fun and exciting opportunity for children to combine fellowship, Christian education, and mission to benefit others Designed to be fun and information, Kids Can Do Missions helps children see the ways God has gifted them to be a blessing to others. For more information, please contact Lisa Carey.

Kamp Mission Edge Adventures is for Grades 5 and 6 :

This group meets during the year for mission activities and fellowship.  During the summer, children are invited to participate in a week-long day camp for fellowship and hands-on missions experiences at local homeless shelters, nursing homes, and food banks.
